It's been nearly five years since the winona county jail was forced to shut down in 2018 after failing to meet modern safety codes and now a new one is ready to take it's place.

As of tuesday, construction is 45% completed.

The new winona county detention center is a far cry from the countys old 1970s jail that was closed in 2018 after not meeting state code for years.

Jail administrator steve buswell said old jails were designed around punishment, but that doesnt work.

No official groundbreaking is planned, but initial work to relocate utilities will begin in two weeks with construction on the site itself tentatively scheduled to start on october 24, winona county jail administrator steve buswell said.
