The SO2 Lewis Structure Controversy: What's Really Going On? - OpenSIPS Trunking Solutions
Overview
Which is more insane, the only reason anyone even considers drawing so2 with a single bond and charges is because of ozone, really though its two double bonds.
The bond length is almost exactly the same as in so3, socl2, so2cl2 and sulfuric acid, ohh and so has a longer bond (cause radicals).
Theres a lot of controversy about this but where possible avoid giving something more than an octet even if it lowers formal charges. Read also: 5 Things You Didn't Know About This Knoxville Craigslist Find
3d orbitals do not contribute anything meaningful to bonding of period 3 compounds despite what you may be taught. Read also: This Simple Trick Stops Sour Noodle Leaks—Guaranteed!
The bonds in so2 has bond order about 1. 5.
Lewis structures are fine for some things.
But in this case you should think in terms of resonance structure.
The valence electrons are delocalized.
What is the structure of so 2?
I have seen two different ways the lewis structure is written:
The formal charges of the so 2 with the single bond and a double bond is larger than the so 2 with two double bonds.
So i would assume that the one with two double bonds is the correct structure.
The lewis structure for sulfur dioxide (so2) can be drawn as follows:
Start with the chemical formula so2, which tells you that the molecule consists of one sulfur (s) atom and two oxygen (o) atoms.
Determine the total number of valence electrons for the atoms in the molecule.
The lewis structure of so 2 provides a detailed understanding of the molecules electron arrangement, molecular geometry, and polarity.
By following the steps in this guide, you can accurately draw the lewis structure of so 2.
I was going through chad's video on lewis structures and once of his examples was sulfur dioxide (so2).
What's the deal with the structure here?
He uses the resonance structures:
But, these resonance structures have formal charges, which are not ideal.
