The current amount stored can be checked by interacting with it.

During any season but winter, you can open the doors on the barns/coops and let the animals out to eat the grass.

During winter, the silos can be filled by harvesting hay with the scythe or buying it from marnie.

Auto feeders are unlocked when barns/coops are upgraded to deluxe.

You unfortunately can't do that trick with a deluxe barn.

You have to have at least one empty feeding spot before you can remove hay from the silo.

Put a chest inside one of your barns and fill that up with feed, you can refill your silos by getting a stack from your chest and left clicking the actual feed dispenser inside the barn / coop.

Every slot in the chest holds 999 feeds, way more than 240 of one silo.

Also saves you materials.

There is a way to get through the entire winter season with only one silo taking up space on the farm.

As explained by reddit user lookforazebra, the strategy is to put a chest next to the silo.

If your silo is full, and you still have a coop or barn that has not fully been upgraded, you can pull all hay from the hay hopper (in coop or barn) and store that hay in a chest.

Then scythe more grass to refill your silo.
